Jaw Crusher Toggle Plate
What is the jaw crusher toggle plate?
The toggle plate of a jaw crusher is a component that connects the movable jaw to the fixed jaw. It is an important part of the jaw crusher because it serves as a safety mechanism that prevents the crushing chamber from being damaged when an uncrushable object enters the crushing chamber.
The toggle plate is made of cast iron, and it is designed to withstand high pressure and heavy loads. It is positioned between the pitman (eccentric shaft) and the swinging jaw, and it transmits the crushing force from the pitman to the jaw.
When an uncrushable object, such as a piece of metal, enters the crushing chamber, the toggle plate compresses to absorb the shock and protect the crusher from damage. Once the object is removed, the toggle plate returns to its original position and the crushing process continues.
The design of the toggle plate varies depending on the manufacturer and the type of crusher, but it typically consists of two plates that are bolted together. The bottom plate is fixed, while the top plate is movable, and it is connected to the swinging jaw. The angle of the toggle plate determines the crushing stroke and the discharge opening of the crusher.
What is the best material for a toggle plate?
In China, the toggle plate standard material is HT200.
- Material Grade: HT200
- Standard: GB/T 9439-2010
- Grey iron steel
- Hardness:163~255HBS
- Chemical composition:C:3.0~3.6 S:≤0.12 P:<0.15 Mn:0.6~1.0 Si:1.4~2.0
Replacing the Toggle Plate And Toggle Seats (with wedge setting adjustment)
If the toggle plate has to be replaced, it is recommended that the following steps be followed:
- Open the crusher’s setting to maximum.
- Remove all necessary covers.
- Attach and tighten lifting hooks to the toggle plate on both sides.
- Attach the chain of a come-along to the toggle plate lifting tool and upper end for example to the eyebolt of the pitman.
- Tension the come-along so that the toggle plate does not drop.
- Support the lower setting adjustment wedge to its position by using a proper sling. Make sure that the sling is properly tensioned.
- Hydraulic setting: In the valve unit, release the hydraulic pressure from the return cylinder by turning the knob of the shut-off valve counterclockwise. You can check the pressure level from the pressure gauge. Mechanical setting: Remove the locking nuts of the tension spring.
- Hydraulic setting: Unfasten the return cylinder from the pitman. Mechanical setting: Unfasten the tension rod from the pitman.
- Use a come-along in order to retract the pitman. Attach a shackle and the wire rope/chain to the back of the pitman. Attach the come-along properly to the frame structures to use it safely.
- Inch the come-along until the toggle plate is loose.
- Lower the toggle plate onto the discharge conveyor belt and take it out.
- Check the condition of the toggle seats and other related components.
- Replace the toggle seats if they are damaged.
- Install the new toggle plate and release the pitman.
- Remove the lower adjusting wedge support.
- Hydraulic setting: Attach the return cylinder to the pitman and pressurize the hydraulic return cylinder. Mechanical setting: Attach the tension rod to the pitman and fasten the locking nuts of the tension spring. Adjust the tension spring length.
- Remove the toggle plate lifting tool.
Replacing the Toggle Plate And Toggle Seats with Active Setting Control
If the toggle plate has to be replaced, it is recommended that the following steps be followed:
- Open the crusher’s setting to maximum.
- Remove all necessary covers.

- Attach the chain of a come-along to the toggle plate lifting tool and upper end for example to the eyebolt of the pitman.
- Tension the come-along so that the toggle plate does not drop.
- Ensure that the pistons cannot move.
- In the valve unit, release the hydraulic pressure from the return cylinder by turning the knob of the shut-off valve counterclockwise. You can check the pressure level from the pressure gauge.
- Unfasten the tension cylinder from the pitman.
- Use a come-along in order to retract the pitman. Attach a shackle and the wire rope/chain to the back of the pitman. Attach the come-along properly to the frame structures to use it safely.
